SURFING 28 STATES: INDIA
After Jonno Durrant and Stefan Hunt completed their film ‘Surfing 50 States: USA’ they
wondered what place on earth they could top that hilarious achievement. India was that place
on earth, and ‘Surfing 28 States: India’ was born.
In October 2010, Jonno and Stefan landed in Delhi ready to travel to all 28 states of India while
also finding an inventive way of surfing in each and every one. They found out quickly from the
locals that, “In India, anything is possible!”. But they were also told, “India is great, always late”.
The following 3 months tested their patience and laughing capacitates equally as they surfed
waterslides, towed by yaks, fireworks, and auto-rickshaws just to name a few.
They also undertook six humanitarian projects through the country. This included; art projects
with ‘Asha Mission’ orphanage, promoting education with ‘Going 2 School’, giving away bicycles
with ‘88 Bikes’, assisting park rangers with ‘The Thin Green Line’, distributing clean water filters
with ‘Waves For Water’, and teaching the kids at ‘Our Home’ orphanage how to surf.
“This was the hardest thing we have ever attempted in our lives”, says Durrant. “We wanted to
give up many times, but we managed to find the funny side of bad situations and get on with the
adventure,” agrees Hunt.
OUR HOME CITY CLASH
Jonno and Stefan later heard that Chacko, the head of the Our Home orphanage was building a
school to provide over 300 local children with free education. They wanted to help. Stefan, who
is based in Sydney, Australia, put on the ‘Our Home Backyard Bash’ and raised over $3500,
now Jonno, who is based in Brooklyn, is putting on the ‘Our Home City Clash’ with his friends,
hoping to raise just as much, if not more.
For only an $8 cover, you get to see two amazing bands, ROAM and FANCY COLORS, and
get a chance to have a silent bid on one of 28 prints of the best photo from each state from the
trip, and witness the US Premiere of the Surfing 28 States: India teaser trailer. There will also
be yummy Indian food, snacks provided by Kind Bars, drinks provided by Vita Coco, and cheap
wine sponsored by Barefoot Wines. There will also be a raffle with gear from First Ascent and
the grand prize is a GSI surfboard. 100% of profits will go to Chacko and the kids of Our Home
to build their school, which is already well under way.
Monster Island Basement, next to Mollusk Surf Shop, River St at Metropolitan Ave, a few blocks
from the Bedford Ave stop on the L train, Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY. Thursday, August 4th,
2011, 7pm, $8. 21+ only.
“We’re so stoked to be having the US Premiere of our teaser trailer in my new home in
Brooklyn”, says Durrant. “You could also get lucky and score yourself a new surfboard in the
raffle or win one of the limited edition prints from our trip”, he continues. “I wonder if you Yanks
can raise more money than us Aussies did with our event”, quips Hunt. “Each of the school
buildings only cost US$2600 in India, so we can really make a big difference to these kids lives.”
